The head of a Birmingham school who slashed lessons for an entire afternoon to save jobs fears more cuts may be needed.
Pupils at Anderton Park Primary in Sparkhill miss out on PE, music and religious education as they are no longer with their teachers on Wednesday afternoons.
They also go home an hour earlier – allowing staff to complete teaching planning and other legally-binding tasks.
The school saves money as no other workers are needed to cover the teachers..
But head Sarah Hewitt-Clarkson said she feared having to reduce school hours still further without government action.
“We are slowly sinking,” she told The Mirror .
“I am constantly worrying about what I will have to do next year if there are further cuts.
“I have been shaving off bits of the timetable for the last five years.”
She has already had to let staff go, cut back on sports coaching and stopped the school orchestra in order to balance her books.
A mum, who wanted to remain anonymous, said: “It puts a burden on a child’s education. It’s not fair on the kids.”
