Aldi Christmas advert 2018: Viewers accuse supermarket of copying Coca-Cola

Aldi’s Christmas advert 2018 has been accused of copying a much more famous Christmas offering – and it’s easy to see why.

The budget supermarket has brought its Kevin the Carrot character back from last year in the first part of its festive advertising campaign.

This year sees Kevin hop behind the wheel of a bright orange truck, decked out in twinkly lights, and drive through a snow-coated forest and village as rosy-cheeked children peek through their curtains.

But a sudden dumping of snow on a treacherous mountain road forces Kevin to swerve, nearly heaving the whole vehicle off the side.

The ad ends with a screaming carrot desperately begging for help as the teetering truck threatens to plunge him to his death.

The vehicle’s striking similarity to the instantly recognisable Coca-Cola truck hasn’t gone unnoticed by Brits – many of who were fooled into thinking it was the original advert.

One user wrote: ‘Hopefully Aldi get sued over this nonsense… sorry but I grew up waiting for the @CocaCola truck ad, was the first sign of X-mas and @AldiUK copying that is both sad (for my inner child) and just plain lazy on @AldiUK part..’

Another said: ‘I was about to be really angry because I thought I was about to watch the Coca Cola Xmas Advert for the first time this year but it was Kevin the Carrot! #tooearly #KevinTheCarrot #aldi #xmasadvert.’

One individual commented: ‘The Aldi advert is such a rip of the Coca-Cola advert!’

The Coca-Cola advert features a fleet of bright red trucks with twinkly lights driving through a snowy forest, lighting up Christmas trees and decorations as it passes.

However, not everyone was upset by the homage, with many saying it was the best Christmas advert of the year.

Dan Tightley wrote: ‘#Aldi clearly taking the p*** out of the Coca Cola Christmas truck, has won the Christmas ad this year already, well played. #savekevin’

Annis-Kate said: ‘Thought the coca-cola Christmas advert was on the tv. But it’s Aldi. Possibly the best ad I’ve seen in a while.’

Martyn Forsyth added: ‘I am loving the Aldi advert parody of the Coca Cola advert! #SaveKevin.’

Responding to the comments on Twitter Aldi wrote : ‘Our parody Christmas advertising campaigns are famous for capturing the anticipation of the season.

‘This year is no exception using our trademark sense of humour and well-loved character, #KevinTheCarrot to capture the magic of families prepping for Christmas.’

Kevin the carrot has returned for a third year for the supermarket’s festive campaign having first hit our screens in 2016.

Aldi is expected to release a series of adverts, as they did last year, allowing viewers to follow Kevin’s story.

A spokesperson for Aldi said: ‘Our Christmas advertising campaigns are famous for capturing the excitement and anticipation of the festive season in a fun and engaging way.
